Where does the route go?

TransAmerica Corridor I-66 WVDOT West Virginia Corridor H

In West Virginia, Future I-66 crosses over the Appalachians using Corridor H, allowing I-66 to move westward from its terminus at I-81. Future I-66 would continue to Weston, WV, and then head south along the current I-79, which would be double-badged as I-79/I-66, until reaching Charleston, WV. From there, the current Corridor G would be upgraded and designated as Future I-66, until it reaches Williamson and the I-73/I-74/I-50 TransAmerica Corridor (King Coal Highway) in Mingo County.

The TransAmerica Corridor [I-50] route enters West Virginia along I-64 until it reaches Beckley, then heads south on the Coalfields Expressway until it reaches Welch. From there, it continues on I-73/I-74 until it reaches Williamson. The TransAmerica Corridor [I-50] route merges into I-66 at Williamson, and moves southwest to enter Kentucky.

Note: In most cases, the I-66 and TransAmerica Corridor [I-50] routes upgrade highways or rural expressways that already exist. In West Virginia, the TransAmerica Corridor [I-50] shares a common corridor with High Priority Corridor 29 (Coalfields Expressway) and High Priority Corridor 5 (I-73/I-74/I-75).
