FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Congresswoman Carol Miller Backs East-West TransAmerica Corridor, Becomes First Ways and Means Member to Join National Coalition West Virginia’s First District Representative also supports clarifying the corridor’s statutory route description through West Virginia.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI — OCTOBER 19, 2026
TransAmerica Corridor, Inc. (TAC) announced today that U.S. Representative Carol D. Miller (WV-01) has issued a Letter of Support for the continued development of the East-West TransAmerica Corridor (High-Priority Corridor 3) and the work of TransAmerica Corridor, Inc. Miller, a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, is the first member of that committee to join the national coalition to finish the East-West TransAmerica Corridor.
The Ways and Means Committee has jurisdiction over the federal taxes that fund the Highway Trust Fund, the primary source of federal highway investment.
In her letter, Miller also supports clarifying the statutory route description of the East-West TransAmerica Corridor to recognize its I-66 and I-50 components through West Virginia.
Miller notes that the congressionally designated route extends through southern West Virginia, including the Williamson, Welch and Beckley areas, where the King Coal Highway and the Coalfields Expressway are important components of the corridor’s future development. Continued investment, she writes, has the potential to strengthen connectivity for southern West Virginia communities, improve access to markets, support economic development and provide more efficient connections between West Virginia and neighboring states.
Both highways are under active construction today. Work on the Coalfields Expressway is underway near Welch, and the King Coal Highway (Future I-73) is also under construction. The East-West TransAmerica Corridor shares most of its current statutory routing through West Virginia with these two highways.
“The work of TransAmerica Corridor, Inc. and its partners have been beneficial to advancing the East-West TransAmerica Corridor,” Miller wrote. She expressed support for continued planning, coordination and development of the corridor, and encouraged federal, state and local agencies to work together as opportunities arise.
Miller is the fourth Member of Congress to provide a Letter of Support, joining Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05), Congressman Mike Bost (IL-12) and Congressman James Comer (KY-01), and the first from West Virginia.
“Congresswoman Miller’s support carries the corridor’s congressional coalition into West Virginia and gives us our first voice on the committee responsible for the revenues that fund our nation’s highways,” said Robert Spurlock, President & Executive Director of TransAmerica Corridor, Inc. “Her letter recognizes what southern West Virginia already knows: the King Coal Highway and the Coalfields Expressway are part of a national corridor Congress designated more than three decades ago. We are grateful to have her on the team as we work to finish what Congress started.”
Miller’s letter also begins TransAmerica Corridor Inc.’s effort to clarify the corridor’s statutory route description. Under the clarification TransAmerica Corridor, Inc. is pursuing, the existing I-66 in Northern Virginia would not need to be decommissioned. Instead, I-66 would continue into West Virginia to Williamson, and a new number, such as I-50, would carry the corridor eastward to Hampton Roads. Clarifying the route description would require congressional action.
“With Congresswoman Carol Miller’s Letter of Support, the national scale of this corridor is coming into view,” Spurlock added. “For the first time in several decades, we have renewed congressional support along the corridor, starting in West Virginia, into Kentucky, where Congressman Hal Rogers provided our first Letter of Support, over to Illinois and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge at Cape Girardeau, the gateway of this corridor into Missouri’s 8th Congressional District.”
