RENEWED SUPPORT FOR THE TRANSAMERICA CORRIDOR
After over a decade of inaction, the I-66 Corridor is regaining its Congressional support.
Completing and extending the East-West TransAmerica Corridor (Future Interstate I-66/I-50) depends on sustained support from the federal, state, and local leaders who represent the communities it will serve. This page shares letters of support from Members of Congress who recognize the Corridor’s role in strengthening freight mobility, regional economic competitiveness, and national connectivity across the twelve states along its route.
These letters reflect a growing, bipartisan recognition that the TransAmerica Corridor (designated by Congress as High Priority Corridor 3 under ISTEA and further codified in the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995) is not a new proposal, but the completion of a route Congress has already authorized.
Why Congressional Support Matters
Every letter of support strengthens the case for federal investment as Congress considers the next long-term surface transportation reauthorization. Support from Members of Congress:
- Demonstrates that local and regional priorities align with federal transportation policyDemonstrates that local and regional priorities align with federal transportation policy
- Reinforces the Corridor’s standing as a Congressionally Authorized Future Interstate
- Helps position priority segments (from Kentucky’s I-66 Somerset Northern Bypass to the Hazard–Pikeville–Williamson gap to the Missouri and Illinois segments) for competitive federal grant programs
- Builds the record needed to secure a dedicated, formula-based funding source for future interstate corridors like this one
